310591 v.1 Mining Major (within Master of Occupational Health and Safety)


Introduction

This major is specifically designed to meet the needs of managers and others involved in occupational health and safety operations in the mining industry. It is designed to advance knowledge, skills and techniques in the prevention of work related disease and injury in mining environments with management of occupational health and safety. Students are provided with opportunities to specialise and undertake research in the mining environment in occupational health, occupational hygiene, safety and risk management, ergonomics, occupational medicine, environmental management and other related areas.Those demonstrating excellence in research will have the opportunity to continue to doctoral studies. This Major is not available for International Onshore Students on Student Visas.

Course Organisation

This major consists of core units and two mining units. It is recommended that Accident Prevention and Safety Managment 581 and Risk Management and Safety Technology 582 are completed first. The optional units provide the opportunity to specialise in specific areas of occupational health and safety. All units are offered in Distance Education mode with one unit (Occupational Exposure Measurement and Evaluation 581) requiring attendance at an on-campus session of 4 days. The final unit in the Master is Research Project 650.
